In 1996, the Ku Klux Klan was holding a meeting near the University of Michigan, and hundreds of people came out to protest. That’s when 18-year-old student Keshia Thomas made headlines. She used her body as a human shield to protect a man wearing a Confederate flag T-shirt as he was being physically attacked by protesters.
It’s been 20 years since that photo of Keshia became one of Life magazine’s photos of the year. The Oprah: Where Are They Now? team tracked her down to find out how that fateful day affected her life over the past couple of decades.
