The “Groundbreaking” Aspect of ’60s Sitcom Family Affair

Occasionally, a TV show released decades ago can still feel ahead of its time today. Actress Kathy Garver tells Oprah: Where Are They Now? that Family Affair, the show on which she played the teenager Cissy, offered a window into a lifestyle that you just didn’t see on TV at the time.

“It was one of the first shows to highlight a family that wasn’t a traditional family, but here was a bachelor uncle with three orphaned nieces and nephews to care for, and a ‘manny,’ as we would call him today,” Kathy says.

The “manny” character, Mr. Giles French, played by veteran actor Sebastian Cabot, was the family’s servant and caretaker of the children. “It was really kind of groundbreaking in that aspect,” Kathy says.
