Tahj Mowry is perhaps best known as child genius T.J. Henderson from the ’90s sitcom Smart Guy. Tahj and his older sisters, Tia and Tamera, of Sister, Sister fame, grew up with parents of different racial and ethnic backgrounds.
Tahj tells Oprah: Where Are They Now? how having interracial parents broadened his experiences. “I have the best family,” Tahj says. “There’s four of us in total. I grew up in an interracial family. My mom is black and my dad is white. That can be a tricky thing for some mixed kids.”
Tahj says he was lucky enough to see both worlds as he grew up. “I went to a primarily ethnic school, and I then also went to a primarily white school, where I was like the only black dude,” Tahj says. “I went through being called, you know, the n-word in middle school, and having to be like, ‘What the hell?'”
Ultimately, Tahj says, he identifies as African-American. “Yes, I’m black, and, yes, I have white in me, but I look at myself as an African-American. Sometimes the white side comes out, and sometimes the black side comes out. I can’t help it!”
