The “Transcendent” Moment That Made Oprah Look at Life in a New Way

What does it truly mean to forgive?

The Oprah Winfrey Show was defined, in part, by its aha! moments. Regularly, guests would offer insights that made Oprah and her audience look at life in a completely new way. In January 1990, Oprah says, she had a realization about forgiveness that went even further than most aha! moments and became “transcendent.”

Her guest, Dr. Gerald G. Jampolsky, defined forgiveness as giving up the hope that the past could be any different. Oprah says that once that comment sunk in for her, it took her to “the next level of being a better person.”

Viewers also have an opportunity to own their very own piece of The Oprah Show. Until Monday, May 16, a select number of studio audience chairs will be available for auction, with net proceeds going to the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy Foundation.
